Live Work || Work Live is a vision for a living unit that would allow the owner to wake up and work as they would please. The 3 units are prototypes for a style of dwelling made of easy accessible materials that create a simple and radical architecture. This project provides an ideal condition for artists of all kinds to create a life style around their art. The ground level is an extension of the building above. This unit of space could be used as storage, work space or whatever.

The goal of this project is understanding the paradigm shift from the classical understanding of the role of the body to a more contemporary one that derives its influences from socio-political and socio-economic forces of the time. The model represents an economy of excess with the potential to develop more complex materialities by understanding mass through the dynamics of physics beyond gravity. The posture of the mass has to do with its relation ship to the architecture of the site. It grows out from the ground and walls while attaching itself to the surround buildings like a living organism.

The Immerse(D) project was created to make a spacial condition radically different from its surrounding context Its mission was to involve the occupant in a completely new situation, to envelop them in a space that was unique interesting and private. These conditions were created by merging color, sound, light and the basic building block polystyrene foam cups.

Gaia in Greek mythology is the primordial Earth Goddess; The great mother of all. Mother Nature to our society. The life force of the planet that is embodied by all living things. I use the term because, in many ways the project is just that, a contained microcosm for the world that once was. I say once was because I think of this thesis as a projection into a future; maybe parallel, maybe actual, but most definitely digital. I begin to wonder what is that world like, who lives there, what do they do. Who are these people and what do they need. Is it even possible to live in such extreme environments; an environment that is changing and slowly dying. Gaia is an adapting and changing place. One in which workers or scientists, agriculturalist or doctors live with sparse nature, animals and other beings as the care takers of one another. All elements here exist together to support the life of all the area. To say the building is alive is a bold statements but in a way it is living and is full of life. Gaia is a landmass and feed destination for aviaries, a new water for the aquatic, a skin and exoskeleton for desalination and a new home for all. The interior is partly a green house, a new Eden. The lower tier is for recreation and the upper levels are for observation and living. The building rests on top of several inflatables, allowing the ability to be mobile to find new resources. I would like to say this project speculates on technological systems we use today with hope that these technologies will grow exponentially.

Through technology and its advancements we are able to utilize digital fabrication techniques that redefine previous assumptions of material and assembly systems. Pultrusion of a carbon fiber strand system has particular advantages that can be explored through scripting techniques. The Toronto Dominion Center Towers, designed by Mies Van der Rohe, can be viewed as the most ideal host for developing a templating system. The Toronto Dominion Center towers are our “host”. We will develop an additive system that will begin to embed itself within itself. Through this we will look at the moments that allow connection to be formed between the newly infected towers. The existing steel of the towers would act like a scaffold, to allow for support and material to be transferred, but after the secondary material takes hold and Begins to gain strength within bundles; the original primary system can begin to recede or shift where it could not before. A new interpretation of floor space, façade design, patterning and transparency are questions on the table. Allowing for the carbon fibers to be a series of nested nests, a new rigidity is possible. Relying on a system of multi-layered pipes some can be seen as purely aesthetic, but no clear differentiation is made between the discrete layered systems. “This reaction is a kind of fashion”

Challenges the idea of “thickness” in architecture where skin acts as strictly surface topology. It attempts to create an integrated architecture of highly ornate surface which breaks away from a pattern logic and begins to form both space and structure. The protoarchitectural system is comprised of three layers all based on a triangular volumetric module. Three layers, each at larger scalar units (x,2x,&4x) are superimposed to create a dynamic patterned reading. The first layer (x) acts as a sunscreen the second (2x) is the system’s enclosure, and the third layer (4x) acts as a structural system. Connection bars vary, allowing the layers to delaminate at various moments to provide for interstitial spaces.

Omotesando St. Aoyama Neighborhood, Minato-ward

Challenges the idea of “thinness” in architectural surface and skin. The project takes a singular module type which Propagates itself over the entire massing. Much like an article of clothing, the envelope was designed with individual panels which are attached together at the seams. Instead of a shrink-wrapped envelope, the building “tears” apart at the seam conditions to reveal interior programmatic activity, specifically at the runway level. The specific component deployed was chosen for it’s sectional qualities - one surface which splays into a second, and could be used for additional structural support or to reach back and attach to interior members. It investigates the notion of introducing variation within this homogenous structure by utilizing three different conditions of treating the spaces between - open structure, glazing, and solid fill. The intensity, and location, of each condition creates a secondary figuration which brings the massing into a cohesive whole.
